- Camp Hornbywas initiated in 2002 by a group of vision professionals, blind adults, and parents of blind children. The group was seeking to create a unique environment for blind children to expand their physical and social boundaries in a challenging and supportive atmosphere.
John Mason, the Program Co-ordinator for the project, selected the Tribune Bay Outdoor Education Centre as the location for the camp because of its unique facilities and its long history of excellence as an outdoor education centre. For several years the centre had been offering a family camp for deaf and hard of hearing children and youth and this was used as their model. Starting with a dozen campers, parents and volunteers in 2002, the camp welcomed 75 people in 2009! All protocols and operating procedures of Camp Hornby Society have been reviewed and approved by the BC Ministry of Children & Family Development.
